Lake Tahoe Weddings by Season – Which is Best For You? From a Lake Tahoe Wedding Planner

Planning your dream wedding in Lake Tahoe? What season are you thinking of getting married in? Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall? Regardless of your choice, Lake Tahoe offers one-of-a-kind beauty, with tranquil lake views and stunning mountain landscapes. But with four unique seasons, each brings its own flair and challenges. Here’s a guide on what to expect for each season in Lake Tahoe for your wedding day.

Winter Weddings (December through February)

What to expect: Winter in Lake Tahoe is a snowy wonderland, perfect for couples who want a smaller wedding and dream of a cozy and romantic wedding with snow-covered mountains. However, the days are shorter, and temperatures range from 15°F to 45°F, making it a chilly experience, yet undeniably magical.

Pros:

  • Stunning snowy backdrops make for amazing photos.

  • Cozy indoor venues with fireplaces make for a warm, intimate vibe.

  • Some venues may have off-season pricing for Winter months, so you may potentially save some money.

Cons:

  • Weather delays and road closures are common due to the snow. Some of your guests may have trouble getting to Lake Tahoe for your wedding.

  • If there’s a severe storm, flights could get delayed / cancelled, or even some of your vendors may potentially get snowed in or unable to get to your wedding due to road closures.

Planning Tips:

  • Encourage your guests to arrive a day or two early, or to make a longer trip out of your wedding weekend to avoid delay from snow.

  • For a winter wedding that’s as hassle free as possible, work with a Lake Tahoe wedding planner familiar with the unique winter logistics.

  • Choose local vendors, familiar with Reno/Tahoe storms.

Spring Weddings (March through May)

What to expect: Spring brings a refreshing transition in Lake Tahoe as the snow (slowly) begins to melt, and the greenery begins to return. However, Spring weather is unpredictable, it can range from mild to chilly, with some late snowfalls potentially in the forecast. Temperatures gradually warm up through the season, ranging from average highs of 51°F in March to 68°F in May, with lows between 26°F and 37°F. I'll admit, it’s hard to put March, April and May in the same category, as they’re all pretty different. If you’re wanting a warmer wedding or the possibility of holding an outdoor reception, May could be the right choice for you.

Pros:

  • Smaller crowds in Lake Tahoe.

  • Nature begins to bloom, especially in late spring, providing a beautiful, lush setting.

Cons:

  • Unpredictable weather means you could encounter anything from a warm sunny day to a rampant snowstorm.

  • Roads in Lake Tahoe are generally in a rough condition as a repercussion from Winter snowstorms.

  • If you’re dreaming of a green mountain landscape for your wedding, you may want to consider Summer or Fall instead, as the mountains are still covered in snow in Spring.

Planning Tips:

  • Choose a venue with indoor and outdoor options to ensure flexibility.

  • Consider a late-spring date for a better chance of mild weather.

  • In March and April, it’s probably best to plan for your reception to be held indoors.

Summer Weddings (June through August)

What to expect: Summer in Lake Tahoe is peak season, and for a reason! You can expect warm, sunny days with average temperatures between 75°F and 90°F. Summer is perfect for couples who have always envisioned an outdoor wedding right on the lake.

Pros:

  • Consistently warm, sunny, and overall pleasant weather.

  • Lake Tahoe’s water looks crystal clear during this season, making for even better photos.

Cons:

  • Summer is unfortunately also Lake Tahoe’s fire season. Wildfire season has become increasingly intense, particularly towards the end of the summer season.

  • There is increased demand, and sometimes higher prices, during peak season in Lake Tahoe, especially on weekends.

Planning Tips:

  • Regardless of the month you choose to get married in Lake Tahoe, it’s important to choose a venue with an indoor backup plan - take it from a professional Lake Tahoe wedding planner!

  • Summer can get very hot, and Lake Tahoe's elevation is high. Ensure you drink enough water and reapply sunscreen; encourage your guests to do the same.

  • Start your planning process early to avoid your dream team of vendors already being booked on peak dates.

Fall Weddings (September through November)

What to expect: Fall in Lake Tahoe is a hidden gem (it’s my personal favorite). Temperatures gradually cool down from around 70°F in early September to around 40°F by November. The leaves changing makes for breathtaking views but note that the leaves generally start to turn in late September / early October. Autumn in Lake Tahoe makes a serene setting for a wedding.

Pros:

  • Fall foliage makes a beautiful and vibrant backdrop for your ceremony and wedding photos.

  • The temperature is comfortable for your guests while the sun is still out.

Cons:

  • The sun starts to set earlier and once its down, it’s definitely time to move the party indoors as temperatures decrease significantly.

Planning Tips:

  • Fall has definitely become a favorite for other couples, so start your planning process early.

  • If you want a warmer month, September is your best bet, although early October has a few warmer days as well.

Choosing the Perfect Season for Your Lake Tahoe Wedding

Ultimately, choosing the best season for your wedding in Lake Tahoe depends on your style and priorities. It’s possible to do hold your ceremony outdoors in any month in Lake Tahoe, but keep in mind the comfort of your guests when determining your reception location.

Whether you’re drawn to the snowy, cozy charm of winter, or the sunny, lively atmosphere of summer, each season is breathtaking in Lake Tahoe, and each has its own unique appeal. Whatever you choose, start planning early, and hire a local wedding planner.
